Tale #3

  1. How do you recognize your world is radically changing and industrializing while still linked to a classical form and domain? The "fat lava" sorts of pottery ask that question. They challenge people to sort out what is striking and beautiful and new. Most people hate it. And therein lies the attraction.

  2. The bottom piece is angled and refined--like the Art Deco period in which it was made--but is also functional stoneware roughly glazed like a piece meant to hold a morning's milk. The combination of style and functional roughness is, to me, very French.

  3. The middle stoneware piece has pretenses to blue and style. It still has functional and earth tone components. Again, that odd French combination of style, roughness, functionality and devil-may-care execution.
