The brass piece is Mr. Bumble from Dickens' Oliver Twist. These sorts of brasses decorated countless middle class homes and showed learning and the capacity to "decorate." Imagine a time when the invention of decoration in the Middle Class was a radical idea.

ReplyDeleteAs of 2016, I value the robot toy at about 50 USD. The Bibendum is worth perhaps 125 USD. The simple piece of brass--almost nothing--maybe 5 USD.
